This quilt was made for the 2010 "Hearts, Hands, and Heritage" Quilt Competition held by H.E.R.E. project at Rice University, Houston. Third place winner. The inspiration for this quilt was the three words of the title of the competition but most specially the word heritage. It made me think of the creativity of the Mexican artisans, the Bicentennial celebration of the Mexican Independence on September the 16th, 2010, and my love of textile art. I used color calico fabrics for border strips, white Muslim for background, color cotton fabric for figure of woman and dress. I hand painted face, machine felted felt for hair and four corner flowers. I hand painted on white calico appliqué figures of sun, moon, plate, mug, heart Milagro and bird. I hand died Muslim for backing. I embellished it with machine embroidery stitches as well as free motion machine quilted the appliqué figures. Additional embellishments consist of six Mexican Loteria game cards, mother of pearl and seed bead for ear ring. I used yarn to crochet chain which then I applied with felting machine on the outer edges. I hand embossed the metal heart sewn to the heart Milagro appliqué.
